Comtan is used for Parkinson's disease. It is prescribed when doses of the combination drug levodopa/carbidopa ( Sinemet ) begin to wear off too soon. By extending the effect of each dose of Sinemet, it frees the patient from the stiffness and tremors of Parkinson's for a longer period of time. Comtan works by inhibiting the effect of an enzyme that breaks down the levodopa in Sinemet . It has no effect on Parkinson's disease when used by itself.
Comtan Dosage:
Adults : the recommended dose is one 200 mg tablet with each dose of Sinemet, up to a maximum of 8 doses per day. If you were taking more than 800 mg of levodopa per day before starting Comtan, you will probably need a reduction in your levodopa dose once you begin taking the drug.Comtan Contraindications :
If Comtan gives you an allergic reaction, you won't be able to use it. It is prescribed only with caution for people with liver disease.Comtan Side Effects:
More common side effects of Comtan may include : Abdominal pain, back pain, constipation, diarrhea, discoloration of urine, dizziness, nausea, onset of new movement disorders, tired feeling, vomiting
