You should not use this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to methylphenidate (Ritalin®), if you have problems with severe anxiety, tension, or agitation, if you have Tourette's syndrome, muscle tics, or glaucoma, or if you have taken an MAO inhibitor (Eldepryl®, Marplan®, Nardil®, Parnate®) within the past 14 days. This medicine should not be given to a child under 6 years of age unless your doctor tells you otherwise
Uses:
Tablet
Your doctor will tell you how much of this medicine to take and how often. Do not take more medicine or take it more often than your doctor tells you to.
You may take this medicine with or without food. Because dexmethylphenidate can cause a loss of appetite, it is best to take the medicine after eating or just before a meal, unless your doctor tells you differently.
Always take this medicine with a full glass of liquid (water, milk, or juice).
Never share your medicine with anyone.
If a dose is missed:
If you miss a dose or forget to use your medicine, use it as soon as you can. If your next regular dose is less than 4 hours away, wait until then to use the medicine and skip the missed dose.
Do not use extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
Storage:
Store the medicine at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.
Keep all medicine out of the reach of children.
Special precautions:
Before taking, tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to any medications. tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking. tell your doctor if you have or have ever had heart failure or liver disease. tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking, call your doctor
Make sure your doctor knows if you are also using blood pressure medicine, blood thinners (Coumadin®, warfarin), clonidine (Catapres®, Clorpres®, Combipres®), medicine for seizures (such as Dilantin®, Luminal®, Mysoline®) or medicine for depression (such as amitriptyline, imipramine, trazodone, Norpramin®, Vivactil®, Celexa®, Effexor®, Luvox®, Paxil®, Prozac®, Serzone®, Zoloft®).
Warnings:
Make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have epilepsy, a history of seizures, stomach problems, heart disease, high blood pressure, depression or mental illness, or drug or alcohol problems.
This medicine may be habit-forming. If you feel that the medicine is not working as well, do not take more than your prescribed dose. Call your doctor for instructions.
This medicine may make you dizzy or drowsy. Avoid driving, using machines, or doing anything else that could be dangerous if you are not alert.
Methylphenidate may slow down growth in children. This can cause a child not to gain weight or height normally. Talk with your doctor if you think this is a problem.
Side Effects:
Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in face or hands, swelling or tingling in the mouth or throat, tightness in chest, trouble breathing
