Uses:

• This medicine, like all drugs used to treat cancer, is very strong. Make sure you understand why you are receiving it, and its risks and benefits.
• This medicine must be taken on a schedule. Your doctor will prescribe your exact dose and tell you how often to take it. It is best to take this medicine after meals and at bedtime.
• Do not take more of this medicine than your doctor ordered.
• During your treatment, you may also receive other medicines to help prevent nausea and vomiting.

• Take your medicine as soon as possible.
• If it is almost time for your next regular dose, take two doses at the same time.

Storage:

• Store this medicine at room temperature in a closed container, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.
• Keep all medicine out of the reach of children.

Special precautions:

• Make sure your doctor knows if you are also taking cimetidine (Tagamet®), vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), or medicine to treat depression.

Warnings:

• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine.
• Taking this medicine during pregnancy can cause harm to the unborn baby. You should avoid becoming pregnant during your treatment.
• Your doctor may want to check your blood at regular intervals while you are taking this medicine. Be sure to keep all appointments.
• You may get infections more easily while you are taking altretamine. Stay away from crowds or people with colds, the flu, or other infections.
• Chemotherapy causes nausea and/or vomiting in most people, sometimes even after receiving medicines to prevent it. Ask your doctor or nurse about other ways to control these side effects.

Side Effects:

• Numbness or tingling in arms, hands, legs, or feet
• Unexplained fever, chills, or sore throat
• Unusual bleeding or bruising
• Unusual tiredness
• Wheezing or trouble breathing
• Loss of appetite
• Nausea and vomiting
